The kitchen is a workspace – but it’s also where people gather. The right lighting needs to do both: function well and feel comfortable.
Start with Layers: Task, Ambient, and Accent
Good kitchen lighting is built in layers. You need focused light for work, balanced light for the room, and accents to add warmth and depth.
Under-cabinet lighting: Under-cabinet and under-shelf fixtures provide both task and accent lighting. They illuminate countertops, highlight display areas, and work well in kitchens, workshops, or anywhere you need light right where you’re working. Options include slim LED fixtures, low-voltage lighting, and compact track systems.
Pendants: Pendants can serve as both task and general lighting. They’re often used over islands, counters, and tables, and are available in a wide range of styles and light sources. Adding a dimmer gives you flexibility – bright for prep, softer for dining or entertaining.
Where to Place Lighting in Your Kitchen
Ceiling Lighting: A central ceiling fixture provides general illumination, but it’s rarely enough on its own. Without additional lighting, you may cast shadows over sinks, ranges, and work surfaces. Supplement with recessed or directional lighting where you need it most.
Dinettes, Nooks, and Counters: Decorative pendants work well in these areas, especially when paired with dimmers. They provide enough light for everyday use while allowing you to adjust the mood for meals or gatherings.
Sinks and Ranges: Focused task lighting is essential here. Recessed downlights or directional fixtures positioned directly above these areas improve visibility for cooking and cleaning.
Undercabinet Lighting: Mount fixtures toward the front of cabinets to minimize glare and properly light your work surface. Fixture size and type will vary depending on the light source.
Cabinet Lighting: Lighting above, below, or inside cabinets adds depth and highlights materials and finishes. It’s a simple way to elevate the overall look of the space.
Soffits and Concealed Lighting: Hidden lighting in soffits or other concealed areas creates a warm, layered effect while subtly highlighting cabinetry and architectural details.
